UT to Retire Jersey Numbers

by Allison on July 18th, 2008

This season, the University of Texas will be retiring three football jersey numbers as part of the group of nine overall they’ll be retiring. From football, the school will be retiring the numbers of Vince Young (10), Bobby Layne (22), and Tommy Nobis (60).

Other numbers being retired are those of baseball players Greg Swindell, Burt Hooton, Scoot Bryant, and Brooks Kieschnick, as well as those of basketball players Kevin Durant and Slater Martin.

This is a big deal because UT has only retired four numbers in the past - those of Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, T.J. Ford, and Roger Clemens. Why so stingy with the retirements? Well, previously the school’s by-laws required a player to be honored with a national player of the year award before retirement. Recently, the school changed its rules to include other deserving athletes.

Congrats to all who are being honored with the number retirement!
