Training for the 40

by Allison on February 24th, 2008

Today, the Quarterbacks, Running Backs, and Wide Receivers are working out at the NFL combine. For most of us, this is the really interesting day. Honestly, it’s the only day I’ll really watch on TV. Sorry, but I don’t want to watch a bunch of sweaty 300-pound guys push each other around.

As I type, I’m watching potential draftees run the 40, and one of commentators made an interesting comment - some of these players have inflated their 40 times simply because they’ve been practicing.

Now…if you’re not one of the top 3 picks in your position (and for some, even if you are), you’re going to train hard for the NFL Combine. You have to show what you’re worth. Being picked first round versus second or third round could mean the difference between millions of dollars. For some players, the NFL Combine performances they give will determine whether or not they get drafted at all. Of course you’re going to train.

But if you’re training for the 40, is that really a good representation as to how fast you are on the field?

Maybe too much focus is being put on running the 40. I have a better suggestion:

Let’s make the players run that. I mean, really, it would be more interesting for everyone, impossible to “train” for, and the best way to show NFL scouts how you’ll really perform in a game.

Now that is a combine I’d watch.

    GLADIATORS…..bit of a misnomer…

Gladiators used to put their lives on the line every day as part of their act….these acts were refered to by the Romans as “SPECTACULARS”……

Niether are these people risking anything except dead ratings, nor are they to be associated with spectacular events….

If you want to call a public entertainment show “Gladiators”, then strap a camera to the average U.S. Army soldier laying his life on the line every day……while you’all sit there and lionise these people as anything but the gym flunkies that they are…..Steroids anybody?

When we can throw our support behind people that actually make a living from risking their lives, we might get a better picture of “shows” like this one.

Meanwhile, the title of “Gladiator” should be expunged from the record. Call it something else….Real soldiers are dying every day to enable you to sit and watch these fools go up and down an obstacle course….and as for this being a SPORT….I despair. sport is played by people without media coverage….people who get up and do it for nothing.

Anything else is a business, a bunch of “professional” gymnasium addicts running up and down a field/court….

IF you don’t like this comment….tough…Winnie will probably expunge it…
