Should Mallet Play Next Year?

by Allison on February 12th, 2008

ryan malletRyan Mallet, the pro-style quarterback who played for Michigan last year, left the Big Ten school with Coach Carr. Earlier this year, he announced that he’ll be playing for Arkansas in the future - and then hope that “future” will be 2008. Although transfers are required to sit out for a year, Mallet has applied to the NCAA for eligibility for this coming season.

His reasoning is that there were extenuating circumstances. He choose Michigan to enhance his pro-style of play with Coach Carr, but with the new coach being Rich Rodriguez, everyone knew Mallet wouldn’t do well at the school anymore. Coach Rod likes to move the quarterback, so Mallet would either have to chance his playing style or get used to the bench. No one is surprised that he transfered.

Should Mallet be granted the NCAA waiver? In my opinion, no. Why would anyone transfer for no good reason, especially if you’re a football player with a bright future. Every transfer is because of extenuating circumstances.

Now, say, for example, that a family member passed away and the player had to move to be closer to home. That would be extenuating circumstances. Or, say that the player had an illness that needed to be treated at as certain medical center, closer to another school. That would be extenuating circumstances. Wanting to play somewhere else because you don’t like the coach (or because you were offered a better scholarship, or because you’d have a better education, or because you broke team rules, etc) is not extenuating circumstances.

Yes, I agree that it was a sucky situation for Mallet…but, he did go into Michigan knowing that there would be coaching changed during his time there.

I don’t know what the rules are for the NCAA qualifying a transfer as something due to “extenuating circumstances.” It is quite possible that they’ll grant him the waiver. I just don’t agree with it.
