Ron Zook: Everyone Wants to Play for Me
Over at NCAA Recruiting Scoop, my blogger-friend Robert recently reported on yet another verbal commitment from a high-school superstar to play for Ron Zook and the Fighting Illini. Just a digression for a minute: What the hell is an Illini?
Illinois’ latest catch is Corey Liuget, a four-star defensive end from Florida. He’s the 8th best weakside DE in the country and the 25th best football prospective in Florida…so woo hoo Coach Zook - looks like you’ve snagged a great one.
Let’s not forget that many of college’s best players aren’t recruited at all. Walk-ons are common enough, and some of the players that are ranked as AMAZINGLY AWESOME in high school turn out to drink away their scholarships and sit on the sidelines. That said, Robert makes another great point - Coach Zook is an amazing recruiter. Three other four-star players have already verbally committed to Illinios, and ten lesser players have also said they’ll play for him in 2008.
It’ll be interesting to see whether or not these recruits pan out. Sometimes it’s not about getting the best players. It’s about getting the players you want.
