Rivals Top 100 of 2004: #4 - Rhett Bomar

by Allison on February 10th, 2008

College football recruiting is one thing - a college career and eventual NFL is something completely different. Every year, Rivals.com comes up with their list of the top 100 high school recruits, but how well do these players actually do in college and beyond? Let’s take a walk down memory lane and look at the top prospects of 2004.

Everyone had high hopes for quarterback Rhett Bomar when he signed at Oklahoma in 2004. Wait…who? Oklahoma’s quarterback?

Ah, how we forget names so quickly. Think back a few years. If you’re a Sooner’s fan, you may remember Bomar, who redshirted in 2004, and went on to become their starter in 2005. It was a season of growth, but by the Holiday Bowl, Bomar was Oklahoma’s MVP. It looked like, if he continued to improve, he could contend for the Heisman eventually.

And then, suddenly, Bomar was gone. In August 2006, Sooners hard coach Bob Stoops announced that he has kicked Bomar off of the team for breaking NCAA rules. Apparently, Bomar had been paid for working at Big Red Sports and Imports, which is owned by a long-time OK fan (and a huge donor to the school). Problem was, he had never actually done the work. Basically, they were just giving him money.

So, Bomar sat out a season and then played in 2007 for the San Houston State Bearcats. And he didn’t do badly…but SHS is no Oklahoma.

Bomar still has another year of eligibility, which I’m sure he hopes to use to pump up his stats and get back on the lips of reporters. There may have been some bumps along the way, but he’s not out of the game just yet.
