BCS Frenzy - College Football News and Opinions

Please Check Your Casket at the Door…You don’t Need It

by Allison on December 30th, 2007

After a hateful yell by an Aggies caller at the pep rally (thanks Joe for the video), Joe Pa has more than proved that age is just a number. His 500th college game, the 2007 Alamo Bowl, ended in success, with Penn State winning over Texas A&M 24 - 17. This was Paterno’s 23 career bowl win.

As a Lions fan, I never doubted that the boys could pull it together, but admittedly, they came up against some tough competition, least of which was the fact that this was basically a “home” game for the Aggies, at less than an hour from their college.

It looked a bit grim early on. Texas A&M got two early touchdowns, putting them up 14-0, and as we all know, getting on that “streak” means EVERYTHING in college football. evan-royster.jpgIt did not look good for Penn State, especially with a stadium full of Aggie fans cheering at every first down for the other side.

And then the running backs decided to do what they should have done all season - bench Morelli. Oh, sure, he was on the field…and he did throw for one touchdown. But this was a game of running the ball Rodney Kinlaw and Evan Royster ruled this game, rushing for 143 and 65 yards, respectively. They even let Daryll Clark (who I’m sure will replace Morelli next year) get in some play time, and he did a great job. Of course, Dan Conner and the rest of the defensive line were on point as always, but that’s to be expected from Linebacker U…

You can’t really blame the Aggies…they had no chance against the Penn State offense in this game. Gary Darnell, as interim head coach, isn’t really an offense guy. That showed - they never made the plays happen. When they did score or recover the ball, it was more Penn State’s mistake than it was Texas A&M’s talent.

For me, this marks the end of another year of college football. Yes, I will still be watching the rest of the bowl games…but you know how it is when you’re team’s done playing. I’m already counting the days down to Week One 2008…
