NCAA Violations at Alabama State - Do Colleges Take Enough Responsibility?

by Allison on August 1st, 2008

This past week, Alabama State has announced that they won’t be contesting any of the 23 NCAA rules violations alleged against the school earlier this year. Note that they aren’t admitting to them per se…they’re just choosing not to fight them. Some of the allegations included the use of ineligible players, changing grades, recruiting misdeeds, and an over “lack of institutional control.”

Ouch.

According to interim university president William Harris, the school plans to hire two more compliance officials to help former NCAA official Monique Holland, who is already a part of the Alabama State staff.

That’s really all their saying right now, and with college football season around the corner, that’s probably all they will ever say. Like most NCAA violation charges, this one will probably blow over fairly quickly. People will forget about it as soon as another player gets arrested for a DUI or another coach decides he’s retiring.

I’m not so sure that’s a good thing.

There seems to be a lack of responsibility when it comes to following NCAA rules. Now, I know that NCAA rules can be complex, but the bottom line is that Alabama State - or any school for that matter - shouldn’t have to hire three or more compliance officials. Most of the rules that are broken are not nit-picky. Changing grades to make players eligible is a major offense, for example. It isn’t a mistake. It is morally clear that you aren’t allowed to do that.

Instead, colleges need to step up and take responsibility by firing coaches and athletic directors that allow these “mistakes” to happen. Hire the right people for the job in the first place, and compliance will not be a problem.

What do you think - are colleges doing enough to take responsibility for NCAA violations?
