BCS Frenzy - College Football News and Opinions

NCAA on your Xbox. BFD.

by Allison on November 6th, 2007

If you love NCAA Football, raise your hand. (*raises hand)

If you have an Xbox 360, raise your hand. (*raises hand)

If you’re willing to spend $3 to watch a game that you missed this pass weekend, raise your hand. (*crickets)

Starting yesterday, Microsoft and ESPN have teamed up to bring you sports programming via the Xbox Live community. That’s great, but I can’t help but wonder just how popular this will be. They’ll be offering commercial-free NCAA games for $3 ($4.50 if you want to splurge and go HD) or other programming for $2 ($3 HD). The games will be available for purchase about 48 hours after the original game aired.

Big Freakin’ Deal.

I mean, rarely is there a game so amazing that I’d want to purchase it to watch again. Or, if I miss a game, rarely is there one that I’ll want to see even though I know the outcome and even though clips of the best plays are all over the Internet. I mean, hell, you can go to ESPN.com and read a play-by-play breakdown of the entire thing if you’re that interested.

I’m not saying that this feature is totally useless. I’m just saying that it’s mostly useless. Occasionally, there is a game so great that it becomes a “classic” instantly. Or, maybe you’re a football player who played in the game and want to buy it to watch with your friends. Mr. Cool, this feature may be great for you. Or, if your grandparents are sans Internet and missed a beloved team’s game on Saturday, why not invite them over to watch it on Tuesday night (and by night, I mean about 4:30 pm)? There are some reasons you may want to purchase games…

It just doesn’t seem like a feature I (or anyone) would use often. Maybe I’m just not a big enough crazed fan?

What do you think about this new Xbox Live feature?
