LSU is Out of Time in Overtime

by Allison on November 23rd, 2007

LSU, so happily perched atop the BCS rankings, fell today to Arkansas, and in this record-breaking season for top ten topples, is it any surprise? I will say one thing though - I do think that LSU deserves to be in the National Championship game. It is a real shame that they lost. Of all the teams contending for the top spot, it was LSU that was most consistent, giving up games only in overtimes.

And today it took three overtimes to outdo the Tigers. After a shaky start with not one, but two fumbles, Arkansas came back to show that they’re ranked for a reason. Led by star RB Darren McFadden, the Razorbacks had a big day and left with a final win of 50-48 when LSU failed to make the two-point conversion during the third overtime.

McFadden was second place for the Heisman this year and many people speculated that he’d have it wrapped up this season. That has proved to be laughable, with the Heisman leaders literally changing every week. However, after today’s performance, I’d say that he definitely has a shot again at New York win. He showed his versatility today by playing both running back and quarterback - and leading his team to score in both positions.

This game was so important on a number of other levels too:

  • West Virginia and Ohio State both have a chance to play in the National Championship game. West Virginia has to win against Connecticut this weekend and Ohio State is done - they just have to pray for some strategic wins/losses by other teams.
  • There’s some rumors that LSU coach Les Miles will be one of the contenders to replace Lloyd Carr, who is retiring as head coach at Michigan. Miles was a Wolverine back in the day, but if his team would have gone on to win the national championship, it probably would have been hard to leave. Now, not so hard, assuming Michigan will have them (and if he wins a bowl, I’m sure it will be no contest.)
  • Head coach of Arkansas, Houston Nutt, had a not-so-good start this season, and fans were calling for his dismissal. However, now that he’s beaten LSU, probably THE hardest team to beat in the SEC, if not in the nation, maybe they’ll give him another chance next season.
  • A number of other players shined tonight, which will certainly help with their NFL draft hopes. I’m sure teams have their eyes onĀ  Peyton Hillis, Ali Highsmith, Jacob Hester, and Felix Jones. It takes a good schedule to be noticed in the sea of talent out there.

1 opinion for LSU is Out of Time in Overtime

I was at that game and I have to say that the LSU fans know how to put on a show. They aren’t the most welcoming fans in the world to visiting fans but after the game they were pretty humble. It was a fantastic game that either team could have won. I have had a chance to see McFadden play most of his best games and I have to say that people who want to talk about the two games he didn’t get 100yds, are missing the boat. Throughout his career he has always stepped up in the biggest games. Just check the stats.
