Could Pete Carroll be Heading to the NFL?
ESPN is now reporting that USC head coach Pete Carroll is interested in the Atlanta Falcons coaching position, recently made available when Bobby Petrino hit the road earlier this season.
Carroll is no stranger to the NFL. He served as head coach of the Jets in 1994 and head coach of the Patriots for three years later that decade. He was also assistant coach and defensive coordinator in the NFL for 12 years.
Many believe that Carroll’s USC Trojans could have played in the National Championship game, had it not been for player injuries (amoung those out for part of the season was quarterback John David Booty).
This report brings up a number of questions:
- Will the Falcons trust another college coach right after the bad experience with Petrino?
- Will Carroll be lured away by the job opening, even though he’s said no to Miami, San Diego, San Francisco, Arizona, and Houston in the past?
- Will USC and the Pac-10 will they fight to keep him around?
I believe the answers to those questions are yes, yes, and yes. Will Carroll actually leave, though? That one is up in the air.
