College Football isn’t Racist. You’ve got to be Kidding Me.
INDIANAPOLIS — The head of a black coaches group is frustrated by the lack of minority head coaches in college football, and his remedy may be to go to court.
Keith Floyd, executive director of Black Coaches and Administrators, said Tuesday his group will consider legal action under civil rights legislation…read more here.
What does race have to do with coaching football? Really, tell me. I’d love to know. The BEST candidate should be hired whether he’s black, white, or purple. There should be requirements for colleges to hire or interview a certain number of people for any race. Now THAT is discrimination.
Think about it. Say a college decides to interview 5 candidates for the coaching position. Say the top five candidates just happen to be white. That fifth candidate, if these new rules were put into effect, wouldn’t get the interview because they would HAVE to interview a non-white candidate. That fifth candidate wouldn’t get the interview simply because he was white. How is that not discrimination? The best candidates should get the interview and the top interview should get the job. That’s how ANY job should be.
I understand that there may be an issue of racism from time to time. I’m not saying that it never happens. It does, and it happens often. When a candidate believes that he/she was denied a coaching position due to his/her ethnicity, that case needs to be handled uniquely. The entire NCAA isn’t racist just because a few people are.
The kicker here is the NFL/NCAA minority coaching differences. There are rules about minority hiring in the NFL and there are not in the NCAA. 18.8% of coaches in the NFL are black. 5.5% of coaches in the NCAA are black. That means discrimination in college, right?
Not necessarily. Maybe it means that there are good white candidates in NFL being passed up because they HAVE to hire black coaches. Maybe it means that there is a higher percentage of black coaches applying for jobs in the NFL when compared to the percentage applying for jobs in the NCAA. I haven’t done studies or seen any that are comprehensive to include these figures.
In any case, why would you want to work somewhere where people begrudgingly hired or interviewed you because they HAD to? I wouldn’t want someone to hire me just to fulfill a minority requirement. That’s not a good working situation. I want someone to hire me because I’m the best candidate for the job. If they turn me down because they are racist, then it’s probably for the best. I don’t want to work for people who are racist.
So no, I don’t support the Black Coaches and Administrators. The fact that there is even an exclusive group for JUST blacks seems extremely racist to me to begin with. There’s not a White Coaches and Administrators group. The whole concept is dumbfounding to me. I hopefully look forward to a world where people aren’t idiots.

Beyond the PC side of this issue, I think we ought to look a bit closer at some of the effects a coach’s race can have on his performance. For example, most D1 college football players are Black. I would assume that Black coaches would have an advantage over White coaches of attracting Black athletes. That would mean that many assistant coaches would be Black since they do most of the recruiting. On the other hand, most boosters and big money donors are White, and the head coach has primary responsibility of attracting those dollars to build the new facilities and pay his massive salary, so maybe White head coaches have an advantage there. I’m sure these things are running through the AD’s head when he wants to make a hire.

I agree, but apparently a lot of people are convinced that it’s impossible to totally eradicate racism from the interviewing process for jobs, colleges, etc…
Anyway, they won’t resolve this with regard to jobs college football until they resolve it with regard to colleges in general (affirmative action), and jobs in general.

Are you kidding? This is really getting old, I mean first of all college football is not racist, second of all people apply for jobs then the employer gives the BEST canidate the job. Not because he’s black or white unless your the naacp or another black organization. The fact of the matter is black people are more racist group I know. If something does not go your way you complain and say its racism, get real. I mean, I cant be the only one thats getting really sick of this shit.
