Big 12: It’s Your Season, so don’t F*ck It Up.
Lately, it seems like everyone is talking about how the Big 12 is the conference for quarterbacks in 2008. While it takes more than a good quarterback to have a top team, that is a huge part of a team success, and with so many stars, at least one or two of these teams better be consistently in the BCS top ten. Someone has to rival Ohio State, please.
Let’s take a look at the Big 12’s 2008 quarterback:
- Chase Daniel, Missouri
- Sam Bradford, Oklahoma
- Graham Harrell, Texas Tech
- Todd Reesing, Kansas
- Colt McCoy, Texas
- Cody Hawkins, Colorado
- Zac Robinson, Oklahoma State
- Josh Freeman, Kansas State
- Joe Ganz, Nebraska
- Austen Arnaud, Iowa State
- Stephen McGree, Texas A&M
- Blake Szymanski, Baylor
Ok, not everyone on this list is going to have an amazing year. Let’s face it - Baylor will always suck. However, there are at least eight teams here that have real potential. The problem? As Tom Dienhart of Rivals.com reports, the NFL prospects here are few and far between:
But are any of these signal-callers NFL prospects? I talked to an NFL scout who follows the Big 12 to get his views.
“No, most of these guys don’t project as big-time prospects,” he says. “Most are short quarterbacks who excel in their system.
“Look at Daniel. He’s not even 6-foot. He’s about 5-10. I think he’ll be a late-round pick. He’ll have to find the right system where they move him around and he gets windows to throw through. But Doug Flutie was a small guy. And he’s who Daniel reminds me of.”
So, will the Big 12 have an amazing showing this year, becoming one of the toughest conferences in the BCS? That’s to be determined, but they sure do have some college talent.
