Early NCAA Top 25

This week, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach revised his early top 25 predictions. You can read the full predictions here. Do you agree with his selections?

  1. Ohio State Buckeyes
  2. Georgia Bulldogs
  3. Oklahoma Sooners
  4. USC Trojans
  5. Florida Gators
  6. Missouri Tigers
  7. Clemson Tigers
  8. Texas Longhorns
  9. West Virginia Mountaineers
  10. Auburn Tigers
  11. Texas Tech Red Raiders
  12. LSU Tigers
  13. Arizona State Sun Devils
  14. BYU Cougars
  15. Tennessee Volunteers
  16. Illinois Fighting Illini
  17. Kansas Jayhawks
  18. Wisconsin Badger
  19. Pittsburgh Panther
  20. Virginia Tech Hokies
  21. Fresno State Bulldogs
  22. Wake Forest Demon Deacons
  23. Oregon Ducks
  24. Michigan State Spartans
  25. Penn State Nittany Lions

Is it the year of the Tiger? Maybe! I think there are a few key mistakes with this list. Namely, the end of the list seems pretty week, although I do hope that PSU keeps things together and helps JoePa go out with a bang. I’d probably also rank Missouri a bit higher, and I’m not sure that USC deserves such a top spot. We’ll wait and see how Mark Sanchez works out.

Webcam Networking

webcam ESPN posted an interesting article earlier this week about webcams. The rules of the road are changing in college football, and with advances in technology, many coaches, including Nick Saban, will be recruiting via webcam this year to bypass the “Saban Rule”.

This NCAA rules is keeping head coaches from visiting high schools through May. Before this rule went into effect, recruited was only allowed in short, inadvert contacts, but Saban was accused of breaking this rule last year, so now coaches aren’t allowed to visit at all.

But webcams are allowed.

The AP has reported that “several” of the schools they contacts are using or will use webcams to help recruit. Saban himself has been reportedly contact four or five recruits a day via video conferencing.

Other coaches, including Bobby Bowden and Tommy Tuberville will not be using webcams.

Under NCAA rules, talking via webcam is considered the same as talking during a phone call, so the same rules apply.

Recruiting certainly is evolving. For the better? I’m not so sure. What do you think?

Inside the 2008 NFL Draft: Baltimore Ravens

Now that we’ve had a bit of time to think about the draft picks, let’s go through them one by one. How did your favorite team do? Here’s my take on the Atlanta Flacons.

Draft Picks:

Joe Flacco, QB, Delaware (Rd. 1, Pick 18)
Ray Rice, RB, Rutgers (Rd. 2)
Tavares Gooden, ILB, Miami (FL) (Rd. 3)
Tom Zbikowski, SS, Notre Dame, (Rd. 3)
Oniel Cousins, OG, Texas-El Paso (Rd. 3)
Macus Smith, WR, New Mexico, (Rd. 4)
David Hale, OT, Weber State (Rd. 4)
Haruki Nakamura, DB, Cincinnati (Rd. 6)
Justin Harper, SE, Virginia Tech (Rd. 7)
Allen Patrick, RB, Oklahoma (Rd. 7)

Best Value:

SPORT NCAA FOOTBALL

Ray Rice

Although I love Joe Flacco, I think that the very value in this draft for the Ravens was running back Ray Rice. Rutgers isn’t the most-watched school, but I really think this guy has some talent. As a second-round pick, the Ravens got a great player! He’s definitely someone to watch in the NFL.

Dear Jamar Hornsby,

Dear Jamar Hornsby,

Are you kidding me?

Seriously…are you kidding me?

Usually, I still have some level of respect for anyone who does something wrong and then turns himself in. In the end, if you feel badly and want to make things right, I’ll forgive you in whatever way a BCS blogger who does not know you can forgive you.

But not you, Jamar Hornsby. For you, there is a special circle of hell just waiting.

You stole a credit card - and that I understand. It is tempting to do that when you’re a poor college student trying to make ends meet.

That said - you DO NOT steal the credit card of a DEAD fellow student who passed away after a motorcycle accident with Michael Guilford, one of your teammates.

I want to know how you got Ashley Slonina’s credit card. I want to know why you thought it was any kind of OK to use it. It wasn’t like you used it just once. According to the sheriff’s office - you used the card SEVENTY TIMES to make over $3000 worth of purchases.

But that’s the kind of person you are, isn’t it? I mean, I took a look at your record. In your short time with Florida during the past two seasons, you caused $750 worth of damage during a fight last spring and were suspended from the team for selling tickets to the game in violation of NCAA rules. You have a problem with authority, huh?

To Ashley’s and Michael’s families - all the best. I know things like this only make it harder.

To you, though, Mr. Hornsby…rot in hell, please.

xoxox,

Allison

Inside the 2008 NFL Draft:

Now that we’ve had a bit of time to think about the draft picks, let’s go through them one by one. How did your favorite team do? Here’s my take on the Atlanta Flacons.

Draft Picks:

Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College (Rd. 1, Pick 3)
Sam Baker, OT, USC (Rd. 1, Pick 21)
Curtis Lofton, OLB, Oklahoma (Rd. 2)
Chevis Jackson, CB, LSU (Rd. 3)
Harry Douglas, WR, Louisville (Rd. 3)
Thomas DeCoud, S, Cal (Rd. 3)
Robert James, OLB, Arizona State (Rd. 5)
Kroy Biermann, LB, Montana (Rd. 5)
Thomas Brown, TB, Georgia (Rd. 6)
Wilrey Fountenot, CB, Arizona (Rd. 7)
Keith Zinger, TE, LSU (Rd. 7)

Best Value:

Matt Ryan

I know, I know - I’ve said multiple times that picking a quarterback early on isn’t that great of an option, given the amazing talent out there this year. However, the Falcons REALLY need a franchise QB right now, and I think that they may have found it in Matt Ryan. Getting him third pick might really pay off.

Inside the 2008 NFL Draft: Arizona Cardinals

Now that we’ve had a bit of time to think about the draft picks, let’s go through them one by one. How did your favorite team do? Here’s my take on Arizona Cardinals

Draft Picks:

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tennessee State (Rd. 1, Pick 16)

Calais Campbell, DE, Miami (FL) (Rd. 2)

Early Doucet, WR, LSU (Rd. 3)

Kenny Iwebema, DE, Iowa (Rd. 4)

Tim Hightower, RB, Richmond (Rd. 5)

Chris Harrington, DE, Texas A&M (Rd. 6)

Brandon Keith, OLB, Northern Iowa (Rd. 7)

Best Value:

21 January 2008: Early Doucet from LSU during the 2008 Senior Bowl's South Team practice at the Fairhope Municipal Stadium in Fairhope, Alabama.

Early Doucet

When it comes to the Cardinals, it is all about value. While, in my opinion, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is just “ok” as a 16th pick, Calais Campbell in round 2 is a nice pick and Early Doucet in round 3 is a FANTASTIC pick. Overall, the Cardinals had a decent draft.

Perrilloux Bites the Dust

Ryan Perrilloux As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, LSU Coach Les Miles has kicked would-be start quarterback Ryan Perrilloux off of the team for good.

Thank god.

Seriously, that kid was nothing but trouble. The Tigers will be much more able to focus without his never-ending antics off the field, which have resulted in not only team violations, but also academic failure and problems with the law. His latest (and final) dismissal comes after he tested positive in a team drug screening.

And while I’d love to sit here and make fun of the guy and tell him what a dumbass he is for ruining a potentially AMAZING season and even an NFL career (he showed great promise), really, this is just tragic. Perrilloux’s downfall began in February when his father passed away and he missed mandatory team meetings and practices. I have to think that at least some of his problems stem from his grief.

Sources close to Perrilloux says that he intends to transfer to a Div-II school where he can play for two years while he’s still eligible. I wish him luck, with the hope that he cleans up his act.

USC has Multiple Quarterback Stars

Mark_Sanchez_USC_ncBetter not get too comfortable with your spot, Mark Sanchez.

In April, USC’s coach Pete Carroll announced that Sanchez would be the team’s starting quarterback for 2008.

Then, the spring game happened…and Sanchez wasn’t the star. Redshirt Freshman Aaron Corp dominated the game, with 13 completions out of 16 passes for 158 yards and 2 scores. This included a 25-yard touchdown pass to Travon Patterson to win the game for the White Team.

Will Corp challenge Sanchez’s starting position? Yes, he might, especially if he gets to play occasionally and proves that he’s the better man for the job.

BCS Top Dogs Say No to a Playoff System

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Saying the BCS was in an “unprecedented state of health,” ACC commissioner John Swofford announced Wednesday that college football will not change the way it determines its national champion as it prepares to begin negotiations for future television contracts that will probably run through the 2014 season.

“We will move forward in the next cycle with the current format,” said Swofford, who serves as BCS chairman. “I believe the BCS has never been healthier in its first decade.”

SEC_mark_slive_ncThis just confirms that the the conference commissioners are on crack. What other explanation could there be?

The decision was made during five-hour meeting at which all 11 commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White were presenting.

What we do know is that SEC commission Mike Slive (pictured, left) made the plus-one proposal. We also no that Big 12’s Dan Beebe and Big Ten’s Jim Delany voted “no.” Big East’s Mike Tranghese says he favored an unseeded version of the playoffs, so he probably voted no as well, and we can assumed from history that the Pac 10 was driving force in the “no.” How the others voted, I don’t know.

What do you think - are the commissioners right to keep things how they are, or are you in favor of some kind of playoff system?

Read more about it here.
